That's convenient. Chimera infects the soulless man and adds him to the retinue as he heads down the hall.

At the end of the hall there is a large, black-bound book resting on a pedistal.  An iron pen rests in a concave holder, but there is no obvious source of ink.

Behind the book stands a Bone Devil, who looks at Zero darkly, ignoring the others.

What is your purpose, here?

The bone devil's eyes narrow

And why should you be granted an audience that even most in the lower planes only gain by invitation?

The bone devil chuckles exceedingly unpleasantly

Yes, it certainly does.  The mistress will be MOST interested in talking to you.  Go to the right and down, to the room of the Nine.  I'll let her know you are here.

Zero walks down the path, whistling a little tune.

He arrives in a roughly-hewn room where nine statues are arrayed in a vague semi-circle around a coarse black altar.  There is one for each of the Nine layers of the Hells, and the representations are respectably faithful.

There is an awareness in the statues - some more, some less - as if the Nine were watching, at least with some fragment of their consciousnesses.

There is a stunningly beautiful woman sitting on the altar.  Were Zero a human male, he would have several saving throws to make, with rather substantial penalties.  As it is, he sees a Pleasure Devil of no minor power.

Obviously, this cult is really her way to gather victims.  And judging by the power levels around her, she has been quite successful.

L'Narith smiles: a sight that would render mortal men helpless.

Hello.

Well, Zero can still appreciate talent. And that kind of manipulation is quality.
"Quite impressive. So, you're the one who has taken charge here?"

She settles into a more businesslike stance, her disappointment clear

I have always been in charge.  Levistus assigned me to monitor Elric as a punishment.  Conveniently, Merant's intervention severed that tie but I was never released.

She grins

I am officially still on assignment, directly from one of the Nine, on the material plane.  But my charter is gone and there are precious few with the power to force me back home.

She looks at Zero, leaning forward - her face transformed into a horror-inducing mask of rage and torment.

Tenjin's enemy is one of them, and she would do it given half a chance.  That revolting werefox family doesn't know I still remain:  they assumed I was sent back to the Nine Hells, rather than my own pocket-dimension.

She regains her composure and sits back up

If he sent you here, he expected you to recruit Elric for some mindless task.  You will tell me what that is.

Levistus' statue seems to agree with her statement.

Her eyes narrow

That would be costly... and exactly the sort of thing Elric might be expected to do...

She tilts her head

And what were you to get from this?  You don't seem the sort to do charity work, and I've not seen you around so I don't see a personal angle.

Zero grins.
"A chance to disrupt a major center of healing is always a point of interest for a disease. Also, I intend to incorporate the lycanthrope from the werefoxes into myself. Also, I'm evil and a bit bored. Very dangerous combination."

L'Narith grins

Ahhh.... like the Malebolge, are you?  Interesting....  So, he had some side agenda for the attack, and then would send you on his next errand?

She grins an evil grin

Let me tell you about the fine master Tenjin:  He was an official at the Imperial Court in old Japan, on Earth.  His province failed to produce the proper tribute of rice, and not only did he earn the Emperor's disfavor, but he fell deeply into debt.

He blamed the goddess of rice, and entered into a dark pact with evil forces.

The chuckle in her voice is most difficult to misplace.

What we didn't forsee was that by giving him a bit of dark magic, the excessively supersitious folk would start to worship him.  yes, we claimed his soul... but we didn't get to keep it!  Instead, he became a minor god due to the worship, for even we cannot subvert that.

She smirks

Do you know that he uses his divine power to cause lightning to strike foxes who are hunting out in the fields?  Not were's, not kitsune - foxes: dumb animals hunting mice.

Zero smirks back
"That would explain his obsession with cheap theatrics. He thought the whole fire and lightning schtick was terribly impressive. In that case, I think I'll make other use of him. I've been working on a strain that can overcome traditional antivirus defenses. And infecting a god has all kinds of potential."

L'Narith shakes her head

We do not consider him to actually be a god -- he is a mortal, empowered by worship.  Worship, I might add, that has long since died out.

She steeples her fingers

But to throw away a good plan is not wise, either.  If we were to attack, the only thing that makes any sense is taint.  The only one who would care about that is the Nogitsune lord, Isamu no Hamataro - he must be the next "accomplice".

She looks thoughtful

And so, perhaps, the Dark Lady would be brought into open conflict with her sister at long last.

She shakes her head

Distracting as that would be, it would not be nearly enough.  Who would be next?...

He notes the names she is listing off.

She chuckles again.

Of course not... he's an old courtier, not an idiot.  I think I can add to his offer, if you'd like: I have access to Malebolge - more devilish diseases than can easily be counted.

Let us play along, for now - I have minions who can be spared.  It must not be known it was us, however.  Some random cult, preferably from the slums, must take the blame.  That should be no difficulty, and I shall arrange that.  A simulacrum of my former charge will attend, and die, so Tenjin will be none the wiser.

"As a collector, I'm always interested in rare specimens. Would you like a cult supplied for you? I have access to the majority of the population of this town."

(...Chimera is going to be much harder to kill than I planned. I've come up with some insane powers for it.)

(( Heh.  Oh, well.  Looks like she'll need a new home by the time we're done Wink ))

She shrugs

If you already have the necessary lackeys, that will be most pleasant.

They need a plausible excuse, and so I was thinking of subverting one of the 'purity' sort - there are always one or two lurking around: they hate the fact that there are werefoxes being accepted into society.

Zero closes his eyes for a moment.
"I've got a group. Give me a few minutes to infect the rest of them."

(irony is that if he wanted, this could probably kill the temple.)

L'Narith nods

Good.  They should go around to the derelict Temple of Bahamutte on the next street over from Inari's.  There is a labrynth of secret passages underneath the temple sector, and there is an entrance there.

There is another entrance in Inari's temple, in the living quarters - away from the main sanctuary: they can emerge and wreak havoc.  The disturbance should be sufficient for a small force to plant a taint in the vaguely wooded area just off of the main gate.
