Town Cleanup and Revitalisation Act

In a bid to be more constructive and get a proper dialogue going on particular ways to improve Town, I decided to compile the current concerns and suggestions, both my own and from the discussion previously going on in the Dome

This is NOT meant to spark a discussion on what is wrong with Town! Such discussions invariably run in circles and rarely prove constructive. More often than not they just cause tension and displeasure. I'm sorry I started one such discussion in the Dome.

What this is meant for is suggesting constructive ways to make Town run smoothly for everyone. Please refrain from extensive and excruciating discussions that do not give new suggestions or further suggestions already given. Keep things orderly and with a positive tone.

---

The following are my suggestions and thoughts, based on the lengthy discussions at the Dome. None of these are suggested rules!

1. Get more new people in, and old ones back
We want this to be a large and thriving community. We want an influx of new people and for those who may have left us (completely or almost) to return.

Bringing new people in will probably require some activity outside Enupnion, to make people aware of us and show them that we do not just scuttle around here in our private xenophobic darkness. Personally I've wanted to try getting back into GitP Town for a while, it seems to be doing quite well lately. I'll probably get a character active there soon. There may be some of the old people who have left who now play in GitP or elsewhere, too.

Speaking of former players who have left, we can not change real life, but if the reason for having left is something else, perhaps we can help it. If you're one who has stopped posting here but for whatever reason reads this, then I implore you to let us know why you play in this Town no longer. If you know the reasons for someone else not playing here, please let us know as well. Maybe we can use that knowledge, or atleast know why we have to miss you Smile

2. Swarm the new/returning players
We want to show new people, and returning people, that we are happy to see them. We want to avoid for them to ever feel alone or ignored here in Town. Rebonack pointed out the best way to do this: Priority!

If you see someone new posting, especially someone new who seems alone or lost, drop everything else and go talk to them. If you have no character available to do so, just kill Continuity a few times and get on with it. If none of your characters would seem appropriate, use an NPC. Never let someone be all alone anywhere, especially not new people. Swarm them! Show them that we care, and get them introduced to Town so that they can feel welcome and a part of things here.

3. Keep community threads alive and active at all times
This is an extension of the previous point. If we want new people, and others too, to feel a part of the community and feel welcome and not ignored, we need our community centers to be active and thriving at all times. This includes Trog's and the Streets. These are the places you would advice a newcomer to start in, and we don't really want to see such a place be dead and inactive, and certainly never when new people are around or worse yet posting there.

So this goes out to everyone: Please try to always keep those places alive and well. Post there as often as you can, keep a character around there, even if this kills Continuity. If you see someone post there, join them. Especially if they are new.

Plot threads and personal threads can wait. Those posting in such threads should be used to waiting a little, and probably has a character in Trog's or something to keep them entertained while they wait for you anyway. Plot threads in particular generally move slowly anyway, due to time zones and real life stuff.

We also have a 'Welcome to Enupnion' sticky in the Chit-chat forum. It could perhaps be used more. Ideas?

4. In the long run
We want the above points to stay in our minds in the future, and not be forgotten. We don't want to return here in half a year and have these annoying discussions again. We want to keep Town open, thriving and interesting for all not just the next month but always and until it eventually is no more.

I can think of no way to actually assure this, without rules. And I want no more rules (se further below)! It is really up to everyone of us to keep this in mind and never forget. If anyone sees things starting to deteriorate, please come here and remind everyone what it is we want.

5. TIaP returned
I am going to go right ahead with this one after I post this. I am going to restore the Town Indoctrination and Apprentice Program we had in GitP. I think it is a good way to give new people a way to get properly introduced to Town.

I'm going to rename it Town Introduction and Apprentice Program, because it has a slightly better connotation to it, and it also fits the purpose of it better. It is a place for new people to post if they feel they need someone to introduce or welcome them, have questions or just feel lonely.

I suggest that my TIaP thread (to be posted) is stickied.

6. Cleaning up
I think it is important to keep Enupnion nice and clean, and not filled with outdated stuff that may end up confusing or distracting new people, or even old people. As such I suggest we make an effort to get rid of or update such things. I'll start out with a few things I think should be removed or updated.

The 'Town Hall' sticky is outdated. We no longer have a counsil, or a particular need for a Town Hall thread, as far as I can think. It serves more to possibly confuse than help. I also think we should keep the number of stickies to a minimum, and with my TIaP thread and the News thread I made some time ago the number is growing. Best to keep it down along the way than wait for it to become too much.

The Hamlet. As sad as I am to see something I started get killed, I think it's time to accept that the Hamlet is dead already and should be pulled down. Merge the threads with the regular Town and clear up the number of sub forums. The Hamlet really serves no purpose anymore, and while I did have some ideas for it still, I know when to give up.

The Character Directory sticky maintained by Vael has not been updated in a while. I don't know if she's interested in remaining in charge of it, or if someone else should take it over? I'll pose the question, atleast.

The Character Power Thread sticky in the Character Directory forum, should be unstickied and buried in my opinion. It seems to serve little purpose, and may confuse or make people think that we somehow worry about power levels, which with the addition of the 'Proper use of power' rule should be clear that we don't.

Town Logo Competition sticky in the Art forum. Must be pretty outdated by now.

The two 'World of Enupnion' stickies in the Homebrew forum. That project seems pretty dead. May as well clean up and bury those stickies.

Town Calendar in the Chit-chat forum could use some updating, I think. It's a nice thing to have though. Maybe include in it the birthdays of the players? Other dates too, like when Town was "founded" (April 23, 2006).

7. Sci-Fi Town
I deliberately left out Sci-Fi Town from the above list. First because it seems atleast two people are still posting there. Also, I have considered getting active there myself. But only if there appears to be a chance to revive it and get more people to post there again. Thus I throw the idea of reviving Sci-Fi Town out here, let's see how much interest there is.

In that process, the two stickies there should probably be unstickied to avoid clutter. Exachix has sadly been rather absent for a long time, so perhaps someone else should take over the directory there. I could probably tweak the Dynamic Directory to also list Modern and Sci-Fi threads, but I'd let others have a chance at managing the directory there too.

The other sticky should perhaps be replaced with a small post about the idea and background of the Sci-Fi Town, a sort of intro. And serve as a place for OOC discussion, perhaps.

8. Modern Town
Modern Town seems to be quite alive right now. From an outsiders perspective, atleast. There have been some talk about what went on there, though. Atleast Wukei has voiced some annoyance at not knowing what went on. Perhaps we need a talk on the Modern Town, to clear it up. Maybe make a sticky there where the idea and background is outlined, so that it is clear for all.

And again, perhaps it could use a directory. I can tweak the Dynamic Directory to include Modern, although right now the DD-bot is broken Sad

9. The Games
The Games forum (and subsequently 'Looking for Players') appears to be dying or more or less dead alreadly. I've tried real hard to keep kicking people around and keep it running, but honestly it seems like there's very little interest in keeping it going. Wxdruid suggested to me some time ago that I move my game to GitP, like she's done. I haven't done so yet because frankly I think it would be very, very sad to see the Games section here die completely.

I don't know what to do about this, I feel like I've already tried all I can. Maybe we should just move the two remaining games to GitP and close those two forums down? However sad that would be.

10. Town News
Just a reminder for people to keep posting news about what goes on in Town. This can also help newcomers who may find it hard to figure out what goes on. Heck, it helps everyone keep up with what goes on, since Town is quite big and sometimes a lot of things happen that most people probably miss.

I'll try myself to be more active in posting news too, though I am rather pressed for time right now. I shouldn't even be spending time writing all this, but I do anyway

11. Rules clean-up and simplification
Right. Wukei put it quite well in the Dome at some point. I think we should make an effort to simplify our rules and guidelines as much as possible. Cut everything unnecessary away and leave only the bare bones. If it is true that we are seen as elitist rules monkeys then I think we should make an active effort to change that perception. I believe it will also help Town in general to keep things simple. Let's follow the KISS principle.

I don't think we really have many rules of play at all. We have the rule against godmodding (and metagaming, apparently, see below). We also have the 'Proper use of Power' rule which is really just saying that everyone are equal and have the right to decide what happens to their characters. Actually just an extension of the Godmodding rule. Both rules seem perfectly reasonable and natural to me.

The only rule I suggest to get rid of is the one we added not so long ago. The power level one. It was probably a mistake, but most of all, after reading the 'Rules of Play' I believe it is already mentioned in Vael's excellent guide on making characters that you should probably avoid gods and supremely powerful characters. Is that not all we need to say?

Speaking of that thread, it should probably be renamed to 'Rules and Guides to Play' or something. The majority of that post really has nothing to do with rules, but is just a well-meaning guide on how to play.

I also think we should change the 'Threads' section in that post, to mention that it is ok to break continuity in certain situations. It may have been frowned slightly upon in the past, but I think the general consensus now is that it is ok. I still think one should try to follow the guideline mentioned there, to only post/exist in one thread at a time, but maybe we need to lighten that part of the guide up a little.

I went and read the Forum Rules again, too. And it occured to me that perhaps a few parts of it is worded a little harshly, or could be seen that way. I don't know if new people read it and get discouraged, but it is a possibility worth looking into. In particular the section "The authority figures are right" may sound a little too elitist and harsh. There were a few other points where a softer tone could be considered. Thoughts on this?

The statement that 'Metagaming falls under godmodding, and will lead to similar punishments' under the section 'Godmodding' probably should be reconsidered or explained better. I think we metagame a LOT in Town. When is it wrong?

12. Parties! Yay!
Let's have some more Town-wide parties, like we had in the past. Let me suggest the coming Full-moon party at Inari's (December 12) Razz Let's make it a great, all-Town, all-day foxy full moon party where those less furry of us can get a chance to dress up as foxes. Get foxy avatars of your characters too, perhaps?

Help bring back Inari's to it's former glory, as one of the founding and most influential places of Town.

And after that there's Christmas and New Years too. Lots of party opportunity for all of Town!

---

I think that's all I had. Please keep discussions nice and orderly, as already mentioned.

As one of the two players who still use Space Town, I would naturally like it to have a revival. I know that space is supposed to be a lonely place, but not this lonely.

The Space stickies - I'd agree to un-stickying the discussion thread, and to consolidate the general agreements into one post - the non-magical setting, planet Town, etc. - as you suggested.
I guess I could try and keep a Space Directory up to date, although having it all in a dynamic directory would make it easier to find stuff.
If you want to discuss Sci-Fi Town, or start a revival, I'd love to be involved, so you can contact me through PM or other means.

Apart from the Sci-Fi Town stuff - I support your points, especially the bit about not turning this into a discussion about what's wrong. We don't want to know what's wrong, we just want to do it

I'm not such a good person for keeping things like that running and energized, though I'll likely help reorganize the thread if asked.
If someone else wants to remake it, I'll help. It's probably best for me not to be in charge though.

All of these have been done.

Thanks, Vael Smile

And the Character Directory probably won't need to be updated too often. Unless we get a huge influx of new people suddenly Smile

Any way to completely erase and vanish the old 'inviting people to Enupnion' thread?

I know it has been locked and a final post was added saying that the place isn't working on an invite basis anymore, but I'd love it if that one was completely gone. Someone who is casually browsing can find them self stopping and saying: oops! I guess I'm not wanted here.

Just pointing it out since when I first came here I happened to find that thread. I actually quit playing for a day and thought I should just leave before I got kicked out for not being invited. When I stopped to look closer, I found the thread wasn't used anymore, but not everyone will look closer. The thread hadn't been locked at the time, but it would still be nice if it vanished completely instead of just being locked, provided there is a way to make it vanish.

Houdini Vael makes things vanish!
Poof, 'tis gone!
Wukei

But...doesn't mentioning it here sort of defeat the purpose of erasing it?
Vael

No. The point isn't to make it vanish to forget everything in it, the point is to prevent people from being confused by it.
If we mention it here in the context of calling it invalid, it doesn't really confuse anyone.
DeBunny

Sssssh! I think the assumption is that they won't be that observant.
Or, that at least it won't be showing off the possibility of existing.

Meanwhile, I contemplate the amusement to be gained by keeping public threads open at all times.
My head is filled with madness.
wingrae

Thanks Vael Smile

And the point is just to prevent confusion, I may not be the brightest thing around, but if it confused me it could confuse someone else.
The Bushranger

I can take over the character directory, if y'all don't mind. Smile

I have a few ideas for Sci-Fi town - once the current storyline Ned and Joy are involved in in Town Town is done, I might send them over there on a semi-permament basis. Very Happy

Also, *and* the reason I came here in the first place - the comment about Community Controlled NPCs in the TiAP thread. From the R. Stigetto & Son Creamery & Soda Shoppe thread:
Quote:
The young man who's job is to be the soda jerk happens to be Roberto Stigetto Jr., son of the owner...who isn't seen around much. He speaks in brown text, and, like the fine folks in Trog's, is a community-controlled NPC. Just please try not to break him too badly. Razz

^_^
Seft Sirag

In terms of CCNPC's for the streets - a Town Crier, perhaps?
I'm imagining a slightly portly, elderly gent with curly grey-white hair and beard and a jovial personality.
Not sure why, but the name Tom Farthington comes to mind...
Deadly

Heh, pretty good idea, in my oppinion.

And Roberto Stigetto Jr. has been added to the TIaP CCNPC list
Vael

I'd like to hear more opinions on Deadly's list of suggestions. The moderators will be talking about it, but honestly we're mostly just here to enforce the rules that the forum goers create, so...
What should we be doing? Does anyone care, or can we just act as we see fit?
DeBunny

I like the idea of parties, though I may be somewhat biased. >.>
Swarming new folk always seems a good idea, though I'm of the opinion we should find a clever way to hunt down new people.

Which would give the Indoctrination program something to do.

Having a long, hard think about this, I came to the conclusion that I stopped posting in the greater town because the players of characters that most commonly associated with my characters had stopped playing on those characters, for whatever reasons. Other opportunities elsewhere for RP presented themselves in the meantime, and I'm now quite satisfied for RP without Town. It has, quite simply, fallen off my list of interests.

If The Games board is closed, I will not move to GiantitP for either of the campaigns I'm in here. And you'll never see me on this forum again unless some miracle makes me resume posting in Town.
Deadly

*Seconds Vael about wanting to see more responses to these things*

Regarding the Games section, I have decided I won't be moving my campaign to GitP, instead I'll probably try starting a different campaign there. I'll continue to try and keep it running here, and right now it does at least move. Hopefully it can keep moving, otherwise, as sad as it would be, it'll just have to die.

Naturally I'll keep posting in your game too, Chilli.

It would be really nice if the Games section here could get some more life, however.
Kantur

To talk briefly on the games - I think part of the problem is the inactivity and it just generally not being somewhere that's checked.  There've been a few games I only found out were recruiting when I actually noticed a new posts icons and found it was something that sounded interesting but was already filling up it's last slots and was a couple of pages long.  So it then becomes circular reasoning for me certainly - I don't notice new things in the games forum so I don't check them, so I check the Playground instead and I miss things here because I don't check regularly, so I look elsewhere...

Personally, all I think it needs is some more games to recruit, to become games and people to start checking more often.

Re: Not posting in Town

It's nothing really to do with Town, other than the fact that I found that there was less Chaos for me to get involved with, and too much cybering and plot for my liking. Trying to get back in was tough for me as well, as because of the aforementioned issues, I've been unable to meet up with many people.

I guess I've also changed quite a bit, and as such am not so interested in Town any longer. Which isn't anyone's fault. Just the fact I've moved on to doing other things.
Deadly

Did we... already scare away Beholder and the other new faces? I thought I saw Blackfox posting briefly too. Don't tell me we scared them away already Crying or Very sad

On a different note, we need mentors for TIAP, or it's not really going to work that well. I can't be the only mentor.

We also need a communally controlled NPC for the streets - a Town crier has been suggested. We should get a list of CCNPCs in other threads too.

Also, why aren't anyone coming with any suggestions or thoughts on parties. What kind of sleepy, asocial freaks are we?

Lots of other things here to talk about too. Just take your pick from the first post or come up with something else. Lots and lots to talk about.
Renom

I believe that the main reason that the Sci-Fi town died is because Lord Vader brought everyone into a plot and then left Enupnion. As I see it, the easiest way to revive the Sci-Fi town is to get him back.
DeBunny

Any ideas to spring out of my head for revitilization would be sadly lackluster and probably just nicked bits from others.
It's a hard thing to think on, mostly...

I'd volunteer for the mentor thing, if inherent silliness and frequent tardiness wouldn't make it difficult. >.>
Deadly

Nonsense, DeB. How could sillyness possibly be bad? If anything, new people need to know what sillyness they enter so they don't flee in terror, and what better way to do so than a mentor who knows all about being silly? Razz

Why not just break continuity? Plots have always had their own little seperate timelines to make things work. Noone here have to feel locked up or restricted in any way because of another player, that's the nature of Town.

I agree. While I hadn't been involved in LV's plot, there is no reason that it should keep people from playing. The galaxy is our oyster!
Anyway, a few more people have (re)started playing in Sci-Fi Town, so that's great. Maybe someone should try to resurrect the equivalent 'community' threads, like Bard's Space Tavern, and The Skyway, to use as the central area from which adventures can emerge from. Or summat.
Renom

I agree completely. The problem is, people don't. I cannot see why people do not just program themseles out of continuity, but they do not.

Post Script: By the way, does anyone have a way to contact Lord Vader?

RE: Why I quit New Town

Well first, DivaDe, one of my main RP buddies left for personal reasons. After that, I was doing most of my RPing with ValdisRequiem, and it got too hectic to be juggling three of four characters at the same time, so I just went "I'm done" and quit. Since, I've been doing one character in Old GITP town, though in actuallity, he's really much more associated with the ACRONYMs.

I did recently come back a little for Magtok's new Asylum place. I think the problem for me is that my characters start off as little prewrites when I bring them into Town. If people interact with them, I develop them on the fly, mostly, and then am invested enough to keep playing them. But if nobody else is interested, I pretty much scrap 'em.
The Bushranger

More like was forced to leave. *sighs and pokes Orion a bit* Sad
But same result.

Anyway, hopefully we can revive Sci-Fi, it looks like great fun. Very Happy

After thinking on this, I decided to go ahead and try to fix that. So I've started an Adventurer's Guild in the Games forum, for those who don't check that place and may not have seen.

I hope that this idea of mine can help bring life back to the Games forum.

On a different not, please continue the discussion here. Still lots left to discuss.
Vael

Okay, I'm going to suggest a few things.
If a number of people say "no" then they're not going to happen, or will be modified to people's tastes. If people say yes, or if no one says anything, they'll be changed.
So post, unless you really don't care.

1) My first suggestion is that we merge the gaming forum- looking for players, OOC threads, and IC threads- into one forum. While people still want to use those forums, I don't think there is enough call for them to merit each part having its own forum.

2) Next, I'm thinking of merging Art, Homebrew, and Webcomics into a single section. This will consolidate all of that- Webcomics and Homebrew are rarely- if ever- used, and I think a single Crafts forum should suffice for them all.

3) Hamlet will be removed.

4) Character thread directory will be removed, and I will allow anyone (BR, perhaps?) to make a new one if they feel inclined.

5) Sci-fi directory will be removed.

6) I (along with other moderators and interested parties) begin drafting a newer, simplified version of the rules.
Deadly

On a first glance, I agree with it all, and have little to add right now.

I would suggest waiting just a little with the first point. To see if my recent attempt at kicking some life into that place will change the situation. Who knows, maybe a miracle will happen Razz
Wukei

I think, if anything, the webcomics should go back to the Chit Chat thread since it's links to other sites, and not art shared directly here.

Just my opinion, though.
Vael

I don't think I'd limit the Arts and Crafts forum to just our arts and crafts. It would likely just extend to a discussion of all arts and crafts, which webcomics would fall under.
The Bushranger

*note to self: start work on directory*
Artemis

Um... I kinda like the character directory, quite a bit, actually. It lets me keep track of my own characters, and the characters of other players. If I don't know who someone is, a quick look at the directory usually solves the problem. If someone wants to know a bit more about one of mine, a handy link in my sig points them in the right direction. I think it saves a lot of work from writing long descriptions everytime someone new enters a thread your in, or when you put a new character into a thread. And while I do enjoy writing a nice entry description, usually it's easiest to say "Raril walks into the tavern"

Just my 2cp, the rest looks pretty good to me.
Wukei

They just meant that the single thread that points out all of the player's directory would be deleted (believe me, I panicked at first, too)
The Bushranger

Deleted and replaced by an updated and kept-up-to-date version. ^:^
Artemis

Ooh... you know, I never noticed that was there?
Wukei

Neither did I.  That's why I was worried.  But then I decided to check when they said 'thread' as in singular, instead of 'forum.'
Vael

Oops. >.>
Sorry for the confusion. Yes, just that thread which I theoretically run and collect links to everyone's character threads in.
Vael

Vael wrote:

These three parts have been done. I will continue looking into the others.
Suggestions are still welcome...
Deadly

Did you delete all the threads and posts in the Hamlet, or did they go somewhere strange? The Directory Bot didn't find any of them in the Town forum.

Also, I'll offer my help with the rules drafting if needed. Not sure how much I can help, but if I can, I will.
Vael

They're all gone permanently. My bad if you wanted to keep them. >.>
Deadly

Ah, don't worry about it, I was mostly just wondering. It could have been fun to keep them around, who knows what strange urges one might get some day? But it's not really important.
apeoflight

Why is it that people don't seem to play on the scifi as much and those that do don't check it as often as modern or normal?
Moxie

The few people who do Sci-Fi town don't post as often, unless you are in the Arrowhawk, which might die soon, due to my broken computer. And the slowness of the Arrowhawk comes from me having to figure out where I'm going with ever post.

Yeah, partly because of my time-zone, and how much (or little) Renom can get online, our Osax Swarm group goes fairly slowly. Oh, and part of it is Blackout's fault. :-

I've never been the most regular poster anyway. Still, every little counts, as they say.

As soon as Lord Vader comes back all will be well again.

Also, is there any chance that you could install a 'search' feature to make it eaasier to find old threads?
Xaspian

Well, in the main Town, there's Deadly's Directory. For Sci-Fi, there's only two pages, so just ctrl+f to find it. Or look.

Anyway, I don't think we should rely on LV coming back. We need to just continue making our own plots, and stuff. Once we're finished on Veil, we'll head back to Livingston Station, which seems like the place to be.
Castaras

Search is already implemented.

More parties would be fun.  We did have one party.  It was an armed forces party and you had to dress up as a member of the branch of the military.  It was fun.

The Town is crying for more and more help every day.  Here's some things I think would help keep Enupnion alive:

1: I could bring back the 'Avatar Contest of the Month' or someone else could do it so I could compete and help others compete.

2: We could have a 'Game of the Month' in the RPG forum where each month a game is run that is somehow tied to the month, much like the Avatar Contest of the Month.  IE, December, you'd have to rescue Santa Claus from something evil so that he can spread joy throughout the world.  We could even rotate GMs so that a person doesn't get bored of running it.  People could volunteer to be a GM, it'll be fun.

3: Have one person run a 'Plot of the Month' thing in Town.  It in no way has to associate with the month in any way.  But this is one of those things that you want to get as many players involved, and the town involved, as possible.  We may make it a plot every quarter so that there's a little break in between plots so people don't get bored or tired of being involved.

I really like the idea of the plot of the month. I think that it would be really fun.

I personally wouldn't mind making new avatars for people every month...I'm sure Gaia has ways to celebrate each month, too.  It'd be fun to get peoples' avatars in the spirit of things.
apeoflight

The Avatar thing is a good idea too. It would be fun for new avatars every month.

If no one minds I would like to try my hand at the plot of the month.
Wukei

Sounds good to me.

I'll run this month's AotM. (Ah, if only it was "Avatar the of Month" but that makes no sense...maybe "Avatar that's offered Monthly?"  Yeah...that's a good name for a great acronym.)

I was trying to think of a way to get each forum some attention.  We have the Plot of the Month for Town, Game of the Month for PbP, Avatar that's offered Monthly for Art...

How about a "Special Message Board Game" for Talk?  Each month, a new monthly board game could be started.  I vote Moxie start it, since Moxie heads the idea of Silly Message Board Games.

I was thinking that for the plot of the month we should have it be like a group of villains. So every month or so this group of villains would do something to further their evil plans or some such thing. But it wouldn't just be the group of villains. We could also have random plots thrown in there too and the in between time of plots would be kinda a period of normalcy.

It would be the like plot of a book or series of books. For the big group each plot would be a conflict and the rising action finally coming to a big finisher plot or climax and then things would go back to a state of normality. Same idea with the small villains and other plots but in a shorter time span.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Comments? Feedback?
Wukei

Hm, well I've got a group of villains planning that right now...but they could have competition, I suppose...
