Inside of Martin

If you're in here, Martin let you in, so you're cool.

The space is huge. Easily large enough to house the entire Town at it's peak, it also contains replicas of many iconic Town buildings, including Sneak's and Trog's. And is almost completely deserted.

-------------------------------

Who enters and sees a very familiar man looking at him. Namely, he sees himself. Maybe a bit younger, but a near perfect replica of himself.
"Come on, she needs a Timelord."
Who will, of course, now be able to place the voice. His own, but a bit different. Enough to have prevented instant recognition.
Who

Who kind of just stands there for a second.

"He's a Tardis?"
Keledrath

"I'll explain later, but not now. Follow me."
The man starts off at a good pace.
Who

He follows. Waving his cane about the place to get a general scan.

"And you're...well not me. Clone? Bio-form?"
Keledrath

"Clone, but human. So were you, when you showed up."
Then they see the blue box up ahead.
Who

Who looks dimly at his doppelgänger.

"You let him nest didn't you?"
Keledrath

"We found a way to solve that problem. But yours hasn't been prepped for it, which is why we had to leave it before I broke the seals to let you in."
The man opens the door and reveals the TARDIS Who is familiar with. And it looks to be in pretty poor shape.

(Think of right after they accidently switched into the dimension where Rose first encountered the Cybermen. Dying, in other words, but revivable. Also, if Who's TARDIS is male, switch all uses of "she" to "he")
Who

Who starts pulling up the floor, diving in to the wiring beneath and swearing loudly in Galifreyan.

"What did you do!?"
Keledrath

"The power draw took it's tole. Like I said, she needs a Timelord. I know you can revive her."
The man helps him. It seems the man knows exactly where Who needs to get to.
Who

Who latches on to a large crystal amongst the wires and miscellany.

"Shield your eyes!"
Keledrath

The man looks away.
Who

Who takes a deep breath and focuses, exhaling and forcing several centuries of his life in to the crystal. Attempting to jump start the failing time machine.
Keledrath

It works. The TARDIS returns to life. The man breathes a sigh of relief.
"Thank you. I know what that cost you."
Who

Who clambers back out of the hole in the floor.

"Anything for the girl. So my turn. What are you?"
Keledrath

"Clone is the closest thing. When you arrived, you were dying. So they took a sample of your genetic code and stored your memories as data, to remake your body. From old Town records, we figured out who you were, but we couldn't explain the major difference: we had a human with a blue box, and you were a Timelord. Then, while they were examining the TARDIS, someone found this."
He holds up a broken fob watch.

(You know exactly what it looks like.)
Who

Who regards the watch carefully.

"Okay, why would I do that? This is not sounding like a good future."
Keledrath

"I have no idea. Someone recognized what this was from a report filed in the Town government about this time, so they opened it. They were able to make a clone from the genetic sample they had, which was me. And when I opened it, things got strange. I got a lot of your memories of facts and history, but all of the details pertaining to your life were gone. An autopsy on your body revealed poison. It disabled your regeneration, then went on with your memories of your life. My guess is you hoped the poison only worked on Timelords, so you became human in the hopes of stopping it."
The man pockets the watch.
Who

"Okay, this raises a lot of questions. I'm not ready to think about them right now. First things first. Stay out of my Tardis."
Keledrath

The man grins a little.
"This one, or the other one?"
Who

"Just stay out of MY Tardis. I'm not having it nest again."
Keledrath

"I told you, we fixed it. And I could have Martin fix yours up to eliminate the problem. It's done it before."
Who

Who glares indignantly.

"Don't you touch my Tardis."
Keledrath

"I was just offering, Dad."
The man is still grinning as he extends a hand.
"I'm Mark, by the way."
Who

Who does not take the hand, stepping back a little.

"Please don't call me that. Really."
Keledrath

Mark's grin fades
"I know this is sudden and all. It's just that I've wanted to meet you for over two hundred years."
Who

"Sorry, it's just the last person who said that shot me. I'm sure you're a nice guy and you appear to be a damn sight brighter than him."
Keledrath

"At least you got better. That's one trick I didn't end up with."
Who

"Yeah, clones and half breeds don't tend to. So Martin's a Tardis?"
Keledrath

"In function, yes, in nature, no. Martin was built, not grown, but your TARDIS served as an important base point. And because of that, Martin is actually an AI."
Mark looks around.
"Come on out, Martin. Who's a friend."
An image of the cyber appears next to them.
Who

"Shame, I thought you might have been able to help me with the Chameleon Circuit."
Keledrath

Oh, I can fix that. But it would involve Martin going into your TARDIS.
Martin doesn't seem very talkative.
Who

"Never mind then. Cause you're not going back. Can you leave here? Seems kind of strange I've only just seen you."
Keledrath

Mark seems a bit abashed.
"That's it exactly. I can't leave. Martin is only in control of the internal systems, piloting is done by humans. Normally, it takes a crew of about thirty men, but I'm the only one here. I had to take a few measures to be able to control it properly."
Who

"Measures? That doesn't sound good. Tell me."

Was giving him this  much of a distraction really a good idea?
Keledrath

"I had to plug myself in. A simple enough process, but the problem was maintaining my bodies functions. Martin and I developed a chemical that we added to the air. It keeps my systems working, hut now they don't work without it."
Who

Who winces.

"Sorry, really sorry. Still there's worse places to be stuck."
Keledrath

Mark waves him off
"We should have seen it coming. I needed to make a slight modification to my biological functions. That should have told me there was a problem. My own mistake, and I paid for it."
Who

"Tell you what. When this is over why don't I see if I can have a crack at fixing it?"
Keledrath

"Feel free to try, but I doubt you'll manage it. I have most of your knowledge base, and Martin's help. But maybe the Timelord bits I'm missing will help you make a breakthrough."
Who

"No harm in trying hey? Anyway, I should probably get back, fightin' a virus and everything."
Keledrath

(I'm going to be experimetning with better colors. that light grey is hard to read)

"Go ahead. But it really won't hurt your TARDIS if Martin goes in there. I control the only opening directly. And all I'd need to do to stop any nesting problems is close the door."
Who

"Still not risking it. Can't afford to void the warranty again, I assume you control the door?"
Keledrath

"Yep. And you have a warranty on something that was grown? And you're worried about voiding it when you have acces to someone who can fix just about anything that can go wrong?"
Who

"If you think you can fix anything that goes wrong then you don't know as much as you think you do."
Keledrath

"Maybe, but I've got your experience, and another two hundred years with nothing to do but getting to know the TARDIS. So I think I know about as much as anyone still alive."
Who

"We'll see, I should really go tell my friends the blanket regen idea was a dud."
Keledrath

Martin nods and the door appears next to Who. The image of the robot vanishes.
"Probably for the best. And if any of them trust me, let them know they just have to ask to come in. It does get a bit lonely is this gigantic place."
Who

"I will."

With a cheery wave he heads out through the door.
Keledrath

The door vanishes behind him as Mark heads back for the control room.

-----

Some time later, Mark leaves the control room and begins going over a number of plans and blueprints, marking them up with footnotes and explanations. Martin appears beside him, calling up files as needed.
Keledrath

The door relocates itself to the lab, where Mark is waiting with a short stick. When Wings presumably enters, she'll notice that Mark looks kind of exactly like Who.
LadyOfWar

Winguardia comes through the door, then pauses and does a double take.

"Wait... Who? What are you doing in here?"
Keledrath

Mark holds out his free hand.
Close, not quite. I'm Mark. I'm a clone from the DNA of Who as a human. Now, set the rats down on the table over there.
He gestures with the stick at a clear lab table.
LadyOfWar

Winguardia goes to shake Mark's free hand.

"Well, nice to meet you, Mark." she says. Then she heads for the table and starts unloading the rodents, still in their boxes of course.

"There are three batches here." she says. "Each of the three has received a different inoculation, of course I can't tell you which is which, the point is for this to be a blind study."
Keledrath

Mark looks away.
Martin, add a control.
A fourth box of rats appears, apparantly identical to the rest.
Not a proper test without a control group.
Mark looks back at the table. He points the stick at the first crate and speaks a word.
Roll over.

(You take the first one, feel free to judge as you will, since this would just be a suppression method, not a cure)
LadyOfWar

"Oh, two are test groups, the third is the control. It was inoculated with a placebo to be sure that it is the wingfeather proteins themselves and not the other additives that cause the desired effect."

Did he honestly think Winguardia would neglect to bring a control group?

The first group sheds the magic entirely. It has no effect on their little bodies whatsoever.
Keledrath

Mark shrugs.
Doesn't hurt to make sure this thing works on rats in the first place. If none of them are affected, we'll know the wand is a dud. Who knows, maybe the placebo will manages to block it. That would be funny.
He points the wand at the second group, which happens to be the Martin-provided control.
Chase your tail.
The rats in the crate begin chasing their tails.
Worked on that group.
Mark moves on to the third box.
Stand on your back legs.
LadyOfWar

The whole lot of the third group start trying their darnedest to stand on their little back legs. It primarily results in them sitting up with their front paws tucked in the way rats do.

"It appears to have worked on that group too." Winguardia observes.

Then there is the fourth group.
Keledrath

Mark points the wand at them.
Jump up and down.
LadyOfWar

This time the spell enters the rats, but upon encountering their little brains it is shed like water off of a well-oiled duck, never touching their minds. They keep right on being little rats, crawling about in circles and gnawing on things.

"Wow. We have a winner." Winguardia says. "That last batch was treated with the wingfeather proteins and a compound with an affinity for the glial cells of the central nervous system. By coating the cells that surround and support the neurons of the CNS the proteins create a shield of sorts that only protects the brain and spine. This means that the entire individual is not magic-resistant, instead only their mind is. That way if they are injured magic can still be used to heal other parts of them. I'll go and let John know that we should start producing this one in volume, and find a few human test subjects willing to try it out."
Keledrath

It will work for a time, but it'll be far from a permenant solution.
Mark tosses the wand up, and it vanishes. He scoops up a number of papers and holds them out to her.
Also, could you give these to Who for me? Tell him it that if he follows them, it will fix the nesting problem.
If Wings looks at them, she'll see a number of highly technical diagrams and instructions written in an unfamiliar language.
LadyOfWar

"At least it is a viable solution." she counters his statement that it will only work short-term.

"Sure thing, I'll bring them to him." she takes the papers, and glances them over. "And you and I need to have a talk sometime."

She gathers up the rats and heads back for the lab.
Keledrath

I'll be here whenever you need me.
Mark goes to work on something or other where he can apply his inborn talent with Jiggery Pokery.
Who

This time Aurora actually walks in, looking a little confused and baring pancakes!

"Um...hello?"
Keledrath

Aurora will find herself in Trog's. Mark is sitting at one of the tables. He smiles up at her.
Right over here.
Who

See, now she's just more confused. Although that doesn't preclude her from placing the stack of pancakes in front of him.

"Where am I?"
Keledrath

Trog's, from a really long time in the future. Martin was an evacuation vehicle, and a complete replica of the Town is contained in here.
Mark begins eating.
Who

Okay well that's the first question out of the way.

"And why do you look like Who? Are you him? Cause you shouldn't be here if you are."

Fun fact, if you asked why, she would have no idea.
Keledrath

Nope, human. Mostly. I'm as close to being Who as a human can get without being him.

Meh. Ideas are overrated.
Who

She just kind of looks at him funny, that is pretty weird.

"Mind if I sit down?"
Keledrath

Mark motions at a chair.
Go ahead. And to answer your confusion, Who became human to try and counteract a poison. IT didn't work, but some scientists got a sample of his human DNA. And then they cloned it and tried to put his memories back in it, with imperfect results. Thus I was born.
Who

They totally have more in common than I thought. Like they're eerily similar.

"Sorry to hear that."
Keledrath

Mark gives her a weird look
Where did you get the idea I have a problem with that? I'm effectively an immortal human, and I was the one who knew how the TARDIS worked. In the 200 years after I grew up I was the guy everyone wanted to work with. I was a bloody rock star.

(Seriously, imagine having the opporunity to work with Who on advancing the level of human tech, when he was cooperating)
Who

That's totally unfair, she's a human copy of a time lord and all she got to do was wait tables. Razz

"Oh, never mind. Forget I said anything."
Keledrath

Maybe, but does she know how all the time lord tech works?

No problem. I just wish I'd paid more attention to the bioweapons departments. I might have been able to stop this whole mess.
Who

Nope, she's got a vague understanding of temporal mechanics and a hazy recollection of her sister's memories. Kinda drew the short straw here.

"You know how the TARDIS works. Couldn't you just go back and do those bits again?"
Keledrath

And that's the difference between a kid getting an A in a high school music class and an actual rock star.

Thought about it, but Martin says they hardwired his programming so he can't do that. It risks a paradox, and that isn't something anyone wants.
Who

Yeah in this analogy Aurora kind of is the dorky kid with the clarinet.

"Couldn't you send someone else? Like Who."
Keledrath

Still a paradox. I come back in time to get Who to stop Chimera, Who goes to my time, stops Chimera, then I would never have gone back in time to send him to stop Chimera.
Who

"Oh, right. Well how do you stop him?"
Keledrath

I've been doing what I can to help with the supression methods, and Martin is still trying to generate an antivirus for Chimera. But we can't safely provide him with the test subject he needs.
Who

"Is there anything I can do to help?"
Keledrath

I've got one idea. Can I see that neckalce?
Who

"Just be careful with it okay? My boss gave it me."

She takes it off and holds it out to him.
Keledrath

Mark tosses it over his shoulder and a hole opens up in the floor. The neckalce falls through it.
Martin, you know what to do.
Who

Aurora jumps up from the table, clearly panicked.

"What did you do!?"
Keledrath

The necklace drops out of the ceiling and lands back into Mark's hand.
Here you go. Now enhanced with a glammar effect. It can change how you look, how your clothes look, how it looks, etcetera. And if you really want to freak out Who, it might be able to hide those horns.
A plastic tub slides onto a table by the door and about a dozen more necklaces drop into it.
Who

"I couldn't do that, Amon'd get mad. Well, madder."
Keledrath

Cover them with hair, maybe? I know the basics of binding, but not that many details. And I think I read that there were some vestiges around in my time that don't exist yet.
Who

She shrugs, reaching out for her necklace.

"Doesn't matter really."
Keledrath

Mark hands it to her.
Also, when you leave, would you mind passing those out?
He motions to the tub by the door.
Who

"Sure no problem."

She puts the necklace back on, picking up the tub and heading for the door.
Keledrath

And remind Who to get to work fixing the nesting problem. It's all in the blueprints.
Who

"I will."

She has no idea what that means but she totally will and off she goes!
Keledrath

The door closes and disappears behind her. Mark leans over the table as the surface becomes what appears to be a really freakin' big crossword. In 5 languages.

=====

Much later, during Mark's conversation with Herald over the intercom, an alarm goes off.
Martin, what are you doing?
Overriding system protocols. Enabling full motor controls.
Martin, where are you trying to go? I'll get plugged in.
That is unnecessary. I will go myself.
The Herald

Herald enters! And looks around.
Keledrath

She's in a sizable library. And by sizable, I mean she can't see an end in any direction. The door she entered is free standing. From behind a nearby row of shelves there is a distinct sound of wheels.
The Herald

Herald heads for the sound of wheels.
Keledrath

Well, she sees a man that looks exactly like Who sliding along on a wheelie chair.
Pleased to meet you, I'm Mark. Normally, I'd be standing to greet you, but my body is still recovering from Martin's accident with the life support.
I apologized already. It was an honest mistake. Why do you keep bringing it up?

(note, wheelie chair = kind in an office, not wheelchair for the handicapped.)
The Herald

"Hello, Mark. I'm looking for books on chemic substances and skills."
Keledrath

Of course you are. First question, how much do you already know? Absolutely nothing, tribal level, high school, elementary school, witch doctor, velocichemist, etc?
