I've been thinking of some changes that I could make to the forums, in part to tidy up and in part just to put a more personal touch on things. With the permission of you, my fellow friends and forumgoers, I would like to implement some (if not all) of the following modifications to Enupnion:

[The Town]
I'm going to be completely honest with you. I freaking love The Town. I love how open-ended it is. I love the characters that inhabit it, and I love playing there. I do, however, have the slightest little gripe. It's really just an aesthetics thing. I very much dislike having to call it 'The Town'. For one thing, the place is hardly a town at all. At the bare minimum what we have is a medium-sized metropolis, once you take into account all of the NPCs and their homes and businesses. So, it's very clearly a misnomer that may have applied to it at its very beginning at GitP but is, to me, no longer applicable to its current state. Therefore, I propose that we give The Town a proper name. I know, I know, calling it 'The Town' is very much traditional by now. But I hardly think that giving it our personal touch would diminish in any way our enjoyment of it. It might even solidify our feelings of ownership. In any case, I am not so audacious to claim to know the perfect name right off the top of my head. However, since the story that I am familiar with places The Town on a planet that is at the very center of all of Existence, I do not think that calling it something like 'The Nexus' would be such a bad idea.

[The Modern Town]
Pretty much the same as above, as I'd like to name The Modern Town something different. The good thing about this is, because The Modern Town has not been around for nearly as long as The Town has, there's really no tradition established to the name so there should be no stigma to changing it. I don't yet have a good idea as to what I would like it to be called, but I do have some general thoughts on the matter that I am willing to share with anyone interested in hearing them (Metapolis, for instance, combines the words 'meta', which means 'beyond' and 'metropolis', which means 'big city'). On to my second point... I love the idea of a place set in (more or less) modern times, but The Modern Town has slowed down to the point where there is very little activity in it anymore. I think that this may be because The Modern Town lacks a strong central theme. The Town's theme is that anything goes. The Hamlet's theme is its Westernesque atmosphere. The Modern Town lacks, I think, a cohesive element. It's all over the place, but not in a good way, as is The Town. I propose that we introduce such a theme into The Modern Town to tie it all together and make it interesting again. I was inspired by Nevrmore's "The Xavier Institute" plot that I found very interesting up until its premature ending. I propose that, as The Hamlet is centered around the genre of the Wild West, The Modern Town should be centered around the Superhero genre, which I see as making a good deal of sense seeing as how people with superpowers have already been introduced via Nevrmore's plotline. If we expand the 'People-With-Superpowers' idea we will find ourself with a central theme, the unifying element that just might revitalize The Modern Town.

[The Hamlet]
We need to give it an original name. Something vaguely Spanish-sounding, I think, if not actually Spanish. Fortinville, for example, is a mishmash of Spanish and English that pretty much means 'outpost town' ('Fortín' is literally Spanish for 'outpost'). The only thing that I think that this part of the forum needs is more players, so I very much encourage those that have not to make a character and start playing in The Hamlet. You don't know what you're missing; it's a great deal of fun.

[The Meta Town]
Remember at the very beginning of this post where I mentioned my desire to 'tidy up'? Here we are. I would very much like to delete The Meta Town from forum. It seems to me like it is almost always empty, with acvtivity happening sporadically at best and very rarely at worst. I see no reason why the characters made for The Meta Town could not simply be moved to The Town. As such, I see no real reason to keep The Meta Town in its own separate, rarely-updated section and thus no reason why it should not be deleted and its contents moved over to The Town proper.

And that's it. The post is actually longer than I thought it would be when I started, but I think that it's for the best. Feel free to discuss this and to tell me what you think, as I would very much like for this to be done as democratically as possible. Thank you for taking the time to read all of this. I hope that I did not offend anyone.

I've been here long enough that I've grown to like the simple, almost ironic name "The Town." I just couldn't possibly break this tradition. I hope others agree with me...

As for Modern Town, I like the idea of the superhero theme. I and a few others have been trying to instigate interest in Modern Town for a while now, and the conspiracies surrounding the remaining Xavier's characters and their actions and whereabouts have involved the police. It's interesting, come and join us, people! As for naming it, I suppose. I don't really have any ideas though.

I happen to have a character just about ready to be introduced in the Hamlet. Ms E and I both, actually. And yeah, I agree that it should be renamed. I dunno, I just don't really like the name all that much. Razz I feel like such a hypocrite.

Meta Town: Ahh, but it's so much fun to play Moozy. He's like tDM, but more annoying. I hope I didn't annoy anyone too much.

While I had some part in the creation of Meta Town (warping Vael's mind enough to get the idea, for example), it is very cluttered and pretty much just taking up space.

The other suggestions I can live with; I'd be a fan of calling the Town 'Karadur'- it is a bit annoying to live in a Town with no name.

I accept the fact that in all likelihood The Town will not be renamed. I just thought that I'd bring it up.

I am glad that you like the superhero idea. I think that it would fit rather nicely and renew interest in that part of the forum. I sort of like the name that I came up with but I am, of course, interested to hear other ideas.

As for The Hamlet... my idea for a name wasn't very good. It was simply an example and I'm sure that we can think of something better. I'm glad that you two are making characters for it! As I said, it's a great deal of fun.

There is no reason that you could not play a decent caricature of yourself in The Town. I truly see no reason to keep The Meta Town as its own seperate area any longer, as nothing ever seems to happen there. But, as always, I will obey the majority.

Hm, I'm rather fond of Town being Town. To me it has a lot of history associated with it.

I agree, Town should stay Town, but I'm not against the idea of renaming Modern Town. Metropolis was the first thing to come to my mind for it, as generic as it may be. And alas, Maybe it's time for Meta Town to die. Too bad, I was looking forward to some of the Evil college classes, if they were ever going to start.

I also think Town should stay Town. It's fun to have characters say that they live in Town and other characters think he/she's nuts.

I don't mind changing the name of Modern Town, though. This is a newer thing and doesn't have as much history as Town.

Sorry, Soph... the lovely simple irony of "The Town" is a running gag that is too good to give up.

I have no substantial opinion about the hamlet or modern town, as I do not participate in either.

I do agree with doing away with meta-town. It was an interesting idea that really didn't go anywhere.

Maybe we could put the Coffee Shop from Meta Town in Chit-Chat? It seemed to be the only truly active thread, and I liked the idea of having a place to hang out and talk like that.

As I have mentioned, I have no problem with moving the worthwhile content of Meta Town to other areas of the forum.

I think renaming the Town is a good idea, to be honest. I also like the simplicity and irony of "The Town" and I would like to keep that part, but I'm willing to consider other options for an actual name, mostly to differentiate this place from old Town other than simply refering to it as the new Town.

As for the Hamlet... I actually like that, although I think "the" should be removed to simply make it "Hamlet". It seems to fit really well as a name for some small outpost on the Western plains... and it reminds me of Shakespeare too, though I suppose that's irrelevant Razz

Oh, and I'll be playing more in Hamlet again. I've just been really busy with some plotting in Town.

I support getting rid of Meta Town. I liked the idea, but it seems to have failed, and no matter how hard I try I can't really think of anything to do there.

I don't really know about Modern. My character there is sort of deadtimed indefinitely, so I guess I don't really have much of an opinion about that.

We did vote...it's name actually is Town.

As for the rest....I'm perfectly happy playing in Modern Town as is...though everyone else can play superheroes if they like...I'm not against it.

I think I see what Soph is getting at with his idea of renaming the Town, but I agree with the others in that it should keep the name.
As a sort of compromise, I'd like to put forth this idea:

Instead of renaming the Town, we should come up with an up to date description of it. Does it have walls? Are there guards? Is the sky magical? How many people are there? How big are the slums? Yada yada yada.
Now, I don't suggest that we come up with a really detailed description. No, it should be vague, but accurate, to allow both a good conception of what it is like, but also a good allowance for people's roleplaying needs.

As a part of this, I always propose that we create a map. Now, I've heard this suggested before, and all the reasons for not doing it.
- Too many threads.
- Too many threads being made.
- Too many changes to Town.
So forth.

So, instead of making THE ULTIMATE DEFINING MAP OF TOWN, what we should do is this:
1) Agree on a small number of threads that are important, popular, and unchanging.
2) Make a number of districts that generally define the feel of different places in Town
Ones I've thought of-
-The Slums (it contains a fair amount of threads)
-The Docks/Beach (important- slow moving, but always there).
-Commerical area (like where the market place, and the bulletin, and Trog's are. Perhaps other things, like Aesa's portal near Trog's, or a home)
Such forth.
3) Create a general map that defines the location of important threads and places, but leaves room for the imagination and the creation and destruction of other threads.

So that's my idea for defining Town.

As for Modern Town, the superhero theme is an interesting idea. I likes it. Gives lots of room (think of all the superheros, for crying out loud. You have Superman, Batman, X-Men, Aliens, Cowboys...), and a good theme at the same time. But hey, even in superville, you needed normal people. Otherwise there wouldn't be such a thing as a superhero. There is plenty of room for all sorts of roleplay.
It could use a name.

Hamlet, meh, maybe give it more time before giving it a name. Give it time to develop.

Meta Town should be scrapped. I liked my idea, and I agree with Exy that it could use a jump start... but I think letting it die for a while might be the best idea, even if we do decide to revive it.
I don't mind saving a few threads though.

I have decided to begin the superhero phase of Modern Town, just to get things started.

If you would like, please take a look at my newest character's introductory post.

I think that I got carried away but, hey, it happens.

Only thing I think needs changing, is an established Timezone it follows. I know some people over the pond are only able to get online when everybody else is asleep, but it's kind of annoying to not be able to say "Good morning." and such, because it's all too relative.

I don't think that we should define ourselves by any particular genre. For instance, while some see the Modern Town as a superhero comic, I see it as a pulpy action novel. If we do genre-define a bit, let's do it in zones within the Town or Modern Town, not with the whole of them.

I'll put a LOT more thought into this when I have more time.

Made a Modern Town superhero (Mostly because I was bored.). I like the Town being called the Town, but I don't object to naming the Modern Town.

Maybe I was a little more narrow in my definition.

I think we can agree that pulpy action novel, graphic novel, and extreme intense action movies (with one sex scene, because you know those are essential =P), and shadow run type stuff are all pretty similar, while also allowing a metric buttload (which equals 100 whole hell of a lots) of options.
That's about as defined as I'd get it. Things blow up. The action is intense. Probably unrealistic, fantastical, or what have you.

You obviously haven't looked at the sheer variety in any particular comic book universe lately.

But I believe we're talking about the classic comic book.

Suffice to say, I think Modern Town is sort of the realm for that sort of fantastical, or... not so fantastical, but above and beyond the normal- roleplay, while remaining in a modern setting.

Anywhere from Bond, to modern cultists summoning demons, to Superman and Batman.

I think Town should remain Town. It just seems to fit, in my opinion. I wouldn't be averse to renaming Modern Town, though.

I agree with Necro and Vael--I've always envisioned Modern Town as an adventure novel. Nothing too fantastical, (resurrections are rare, etc.), but a lot of variety, and lots and lots of action.

I think the concept of a set timezone is good--perhaps to be fair to those on both sides of the Atlantic, we could place it at GMT-2 or something like that? That would admittedly place it either in Greenland or the middle of the Atlantic, but I seem to remember that the OT MT mentioned that it was on a mid-sized island recently risen from the Atlantic east of Newfoundland.
