This system runs a bit differently to DnD.  A level 1 Glyph Sage can cast certain level 9 DnD spells, but the system works so that they cannot do so without risking their lives.  At level 4, they can cast it safely, but only one spell per day.

The System

The system is similar to a fighting videogame.  The more powerful spell you cast, the less energy you have to spend for the rest of the day.  A level 20 Sage can cast as many spells as a level 20 Sorcerer/Wizard without worry.  Anything, lower, however, must use a percentage.

However, the Sage must also know how to write the glyph they're casting.  A level 1 Sage can cast something as complex as Veil (a level 6 spell), but not something as simple as prestidigitation (a level 0 spell) because of the complexity of the writing of it.

Like wizards/sorcerers, spell power can be regained by resting for the day.

Level 1:

Power per spell:
0: 10% power/day
1: 20% power/day
2: 40% power/day; 20% chance of madness
3: 80% power/day; 40% chance of madness
4: 100% power/day; 50% chance of madness
5: 20% possibility of death at casting; 70% chance of madness
6: 40% possibility of death at casting; 80% chance of madness
7: 80% possibility of death at casting; 90% chance of madness
8: 90% possibility of death at casting; 100% chance of madness
9: 95% possibility of death at casting; 100% chance of madness

Spells available:
Up to 5 letter spells; up to 1 word (ie, Alarm [5 letters])

Level 2:

Power per spell:
0: 10% power/day
1: 10% power/day
2: 40% power/day; 20% chance of madness
3: 80% power/day; 40% chance of madness
4: 100% power/day; 50% chance of madness
5: 20% possibility of death at casting; 70% chance of madness
6: 40% possibility of death at casting; 80% chance of madness
7: 80% possibility of death at casting; 90% chance of madness
8: 90% possibility of death at casting; 100% chance of madness
9: 95% possibility of death at casting; 100% chance of madness

Spells available:
Up to 8 letter spells;  up to 1 word (ie, Barkskin [8 letters])

Level 3:

Power per spell:
0: 5% power/day
1: 10% power/day
2: 30% power/day; 10% chance of madness
3: 60% power/day; 30% chance of madness
4: 100% power/day; 50% chance of madness
5: 20% possibility of death at casting; 70% chance of madness
